Webinar: World Wildlife Day

Webinar: World Wildlife Day

Wednesday, March 5, 2025 (1:00 PM - 2:00 PM) (EST)

Description

Webinar: World Wildlife Day

World Wildlife Day (WWD) is celebrated every year on 3 March to acknowledge wild animals and plants. On this day, we recognise the unique roles and contributions of wildlife to people and the planet. The WWD2025 theme is ‘Wildlife Conservation Finance: Investing in People and Planet.’

As part of the celebrations, WOAH is organising a webinar to provide an update on the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) situation and its impact on wildlife in the region, from a biodiversity and ‘One Health’ perspective.

Why get involved?

The spread of HPAI has recently reached unprecedented milestones. Once considered primarily a threat to poultry, the disease has given way to a ‘new normal’ in which the virus is moving from wild birds to wild mammals, with impacts beyond anything seen before. Wildlife loss on the current scale presents an unprecedented risk of wildlife population collapse, creating an ecological crisis. Despite the difficulties, there are strategies to protect wildlife in the short and long term.

Objectives of the seminar

  • To present an update on the impact of avian influenza on wildlife in the region from a conservationist and cross-sectoral perspective.
  • To share the work of WOAH’s group of experts on wildlife.
  • To address questions from participants on the webinar theme.

 Who can participate?

This event is open to everyone. The main target audience is staff of veterinary and wildlife services, biologists and conservationists, students, teachers and researchers, among others.
